Our Story

Inner Glow Superfoods Inc. aims to share our favourite organic superfood fruits with Canadians. We aim to improve the quality of life of fellow Canadians, providing customers with healthy foods that are packed with antioxidants and nutrients. We are proudly Canadian owned and operated, selling frozen açaí to the food industry in Ontario.

Our first product launch is frozen açaí purée, sustainably sourced from the Amazon region of Brazil. If you haven’t yet heard of or tried this superfood, it is delicious, a source of antioxidants and healthy fats, and naturally low in sugars. Frozen açaí purée is most often used to create superfood-packed açaí smoothie bowls, but can also be used used to make a range of innovative recipes like beverages, desserts, jams and even savoury dishes.

We have built a partnership in the community where our product is cultivated. Each fruit is hand picked and frozen within 24 hours to seal in the flavour and the nutrients. Ensuring the demand for açaí berries is maintained and increased in North America is helping to preserve the Amazon rainforest and is helping to provide a sustainable livelihood opportunity for traditionally isolated and marginalized communities.

Origins of the Product:

Our açaí purée comes from berries that are handpicked by local farmers in the heart of the Amazon rainforest region of Brazil. We are helping to support livelihood opportunities for traditionally marginalized communities, and are also helping to preserve the rainforest by increasing the demand for sustainable Amazonian resources.

Açaí berries are picked from the açaí palm tree, which can grow to be up to 25 metres high. There are two harvesting seasons for the fruit each year. In Brazil açaí farmers are called peconheiros because they use an artisanal tool called a peconha, which is made out of leaves. Interestingly, this tool is typically used by their feet to pick the berries. Peconheiros live in small farming villages along the banks of the Amazon river where the berries are picked. They are then transferred by river to larger processing plants for pasteurization and are either frozen into purées or freeze-dried into powder. This is all done in less than 24 hours of the berries being picked to lock in nutrients and ensure optimal quality of the final product.

Our Founder

Our Founder & CEO Kat Bodkin first fell in love with açaí when she was living in Brazil in 2012. She was interning with a sustainable development organization at the time, and frequently had an açaí bowl on the way to her internship. When she returned to Canada she was disappointed as she was not able to find the berry anywhere. Several years later, Kat noticed an opportunity to start a socially responsible company that could be the main provider of açaí to Canadian companies. Soon thereafter, Inner Glow Superfoods Inc. was born!

Kat Bodkin was born and raised in rural Ontario. She has always had a passion for sustainable development and an avid interest in improving her own health through healthy eating and lifestyle choices. Kat founded Inner Glow Superfoods in early 2017 as a way of marrying these two passions. Globally, she aims to empower traditionally marginalized communities and reduce the impact of climate change by helping to save the Amazonian rainforest. She also hopes to make a difference in the lives of fellow Canadians as her products can help to improve overall wellbeing as they are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Kat's family always had a garden with fresh vegetables and fruits, and her grandparents were farmers, so growing up she regularly ate naturally nutritious foods straight from the soil. However, she switched to less healthy and cheaper alternatives after she moved to Toronto for school. As a result, Kat ran into health problems in her mid twenties, and was drawn back to her passion for wellbeing and nutritious foods. Her journey led her to eat organic, nutritious foods again on a regular basis, frequently incorporating various superfoods into her diet.

Eating superfoods like açaí has improved her energy, digestion, and overall quality of life, and she wants to share this lesson with fellow Canadians. Kat has a Master’s degree in Public and International Affairs, and experience working and volunteering across Africa, Latin America, and at various levels of Canadian government. Her experience spans sustainable development, emergency management, public policy and science & innovation diplomacy.
